Sled dog name: Galoot Age at adoption: 8 years Adopted from: Victoria SPCA, April 2012 Coat - single/double: double coat Likes: Digging in soft dirt, sleeping on his comfy bed, mealtime, hotdogs and homemade treats Dislikes: Coughing, the sound of bouncing balls and loud noises Sleeping locations: at night on a big comfy bed in the living room, during the day on either his comfy bed in the living room or his comfy bed in the hallway Off-leash time: no, because he is visually impaired and needs guidance on his walks Escaped or lost: no Siblings: We understand Galute had a biological sibling named Sonny Medical conditions: Galute is missing an eye and is blind in the remaining eye due to a heavy cataract and retinal damage. Galute also has severe arthritis in his hind legs and back. Spayed/Neutered at adoption: yes Known history: We have been told that Galute and his brother Sonny were sold to a Whistler sled dog company when they were about two years old. Anything else you'd like to add: Galute has a wonderful, angelic temperament. He is a very kind and gentle soul. Session notes: Where ChiChi was one of the inspiration bookends for this project, Galute was the other bookend. He was a big boy, but he still didn't scream sled dog to me when I first met him - he seemed more like a St Barnard - he'd be the one to come and take care of you. He was so gentle and stoic and sweet - people couldn't help but love him and want to get lost in his fluffy fur. When his humans brought him over for his session he had a hard time navigating the narrow sidewalk. And they practically had to lift him the 3 steps inside. He was mostly deaf and blind and didn't want treats - even the wieners (his favourite) were hit and miss. He didn't want to stand in one spot for long so we put the mat under him and his mom Susan held the leash up to help hold him up. The whole session lasted 30 mins tops. When he left, I knew that was last time I was going to see him. When he passed away in February 2018 it wasn't a surprise, but it wasn't any less sad and I shared some photos of him in a blog post. Galute is a survivor of the 2010 Whistler sled dog cull. Galute passed away in February 2018. |
