Name: Candy
Age: best guess is around 12 years old, female Weight: 25 kg Breed/Mix: siberian husky and saluki Sled dog name: Candy Age at adoption: around 8 years old Adopted from: WAG in Whistler, December 11, 2013 Coat - single/double: single coat Likes: Candy loves her sisters more than anything Dislikes: she hates being inside and will not eat chicken! Sleeping locations: during the day, outside in the sun; at night, on her bed beside the door, always Off-leash time: every day Escaped or lost?: During our first couple of years, Candy has ran away a few times only to eventually return after a couple hours of running around Siblings: Chocolate (RIP), Gummi Bear (now Elwen), Pez, Licorice (in Ontario, I think) Medical conditions: At adoption we didn’t know of any conditions other than her being very, very skinny. Nowadays, my girl has a cancerous tumour that is spreading rapidly throughout her body. Spayed/Neutered at adoption: yes Known history: I heard she was part of a sprint racing team and a lead dog, came from Whistler Anything else you'd like to add: Candy has a love for her siblings and former running partners that is very special to witness. The pure joy on her face when she meets up with her sisters will melt your heart. Although she is still terrified to be inside the house, and she does not seek affection from me in a typical way. She is a loyal girl that always checks in and always comes back home. She is one of the gentlest dogs I have ever met along with her sister Chocolate. We have a special connection and a trust that has built up over the past four years of her joining the family and continues to grow. Session notes: There was going to be a meet up at Candy’s house - which is about 80 mins away from me, so I took my studio on the road... so to speak. Candy’s gracious family let me put tape up on the walls to make the box backdrop and use their living room so I could include 4 more sleddies in this project. I didn't use my studio lights due to space, instead I used my flash - so the photos look quite different. When I started this project I didn't think this was in the cards - I wanted something very specific, but (and I've probably mentioned this before), things change and it's more important for me to roll with the changes because in the end, it's about sharing the sleddies and their images and stories. Tail tucks, nervous dogs, dogs not 'quite' in position, leashes attached - I am photographing them in the moment while keeping the sessions as quick and as low stress as possible. For Candy, she was very suspicious of our motives - the treats that she LOVED taking from me outside, were non-existent when she was in the house. She's not a fan of being in the house during the day, so coming inside and being asked to do something in her living room with the furniture re-arranged and a mat that smelled like 45+ other dogs was just weird. Her session was quick and I'm so happy we were able to include her. I met Candy in 2013 when I went to the kennels in Whistler - she was a treat hound then and she was a treat hound this day (outside!)... see some more relaxed photos of Candy here in: A Candyland Gathering! Candy is a survivor of the 2010 Whistler sled dog cull. Candy passed away February 26, 2019. |
